So What Happens On The Pre Surgery Diet?

Weight Loss surgery patients will often have enlarged livers which makes it hard for a surgeon to actually get down and dirty and do the actual operation. Often the surgeons will recommend a VLCD (Very Low Calorie Diet) to the patients with abnormal liver results to shrink the liver so that surgery isn't compromised.

Let's face it, this surgery is dangerous enough with morbidly obese people lying on an operating table. No need to complicate things further.

So how do I shrink my fatty liver? I thought I'd share, for those of you who are interested.

My surgeon recommends that I do a meal replacement program. More specifically, the program that has worked perfectly for his patients since 1991 is the OptiFast program.

The Opti Fast program is the meal replacement shakes that have the letters VLCD (see above) underneath the name on the box. These have a completely nutritionally balanced meal in one sachet. They also included the daily recommended dose of 25 extra minerals and vitamins. Things like Chromium, magnesium, iron etc.

My daily regime basically includes having three of these shakes per day in place of a meal.

Today is 'officially' day one. Til now I have been doing my left over Tony Ferguson shakes. These aren't VLCD shakes but I think I've eased myself into these perhaps?

So generally,  I don't feel overly starved, hungry, cranky or like my throat has been cut, so that's good. I have kept myself busy with cleaning and organising my paperwork in my office! FINALLY!

The shakes taste nice. Not like a big creamy milkshake, but not vile to my tastebuds. I mix them with the required 200 mls of chilled water and they go down lovely.

So to the couple of friends who asked me for this info, I hope I've helped! It'll be nice having you come along on this ride with me. ;-)

Thans for sharing this information, I was very interested but didn't want to pry. Can I ask, do you do optifast from now up until the operation day?

Yes Kym, that's right. I'll be doing this for the next 6 weeks.

You will lose a truck load of weight doing that! My brother-in-law lost around 14 kilos prior to his surgery. It is also not as hard as it sounds because you won't feel so hungry. Hunger is turned on by eating sugar and carbs and you won't be having these. I can't wait to see the results of this and the band (health wise and body wise)

Looks like you've got it all worked out, I hope it all goes well and you don't get too sick of it!

Good idea to stay busy as a distraction! ;)

ps... soulmumma doesn't exist anymore, can you replace it in your list with http://me-lovinglife.blogspot.com/ Ta xx

Here we differ... I hate the shakes. They are vile to me.
I am glad you don't mind them though.

Thanks for sharing that Petal. I was very interested as to what Optifast programme was, but didn't want to ask or make anything more difficult for you or pry too much, you are more important than my own curiosity. I just wanted to say Thankyou for allowing me to share this journey with you. You are my hero. xxxxx

I didnt mind the Tony Ferg shakes - dropped about 6kgs before our holiday last year. Will give them another crack after bub is born.
Thanks for that, I was interested in what is required before surgery.
Good luck, and if you ever get antsy let me know and I will ring you (getting VOIP next week).

I didn't realise you did TF, i did it before i got pregnant with Peyton and lost 5 or 6 kg, i found it really good. Obviously i can't do it whilst i'm breastfeeding but i think once i'm done with that i might get back on that program. Nice and cheap too which is good.
The VLCD looks hard! eek, i was hungry just reading it...lol, sorry, that's probably not what you want to hear... ;) However, it's so worth it in the end... a means to an end... you'll do wonderfully :)

This takes me back to my pre op diet.......very simalar but i was allowed 100 gms or lean protein in the evening with the allowed veges instead of a shake. I did the pre op diet for 8 weeks!!! 5 weeks was where I think I lost track and stopped losing.

Yum, it actually looks pretty good for me
I'm glad it's not the bloody soup diet!

The first few days on Optifast are brutal as your body uses up all the sugar you have stored, especially in your liver. Day 4 and 5 were the worst for me (it was in my blog) and I had to eat a few crackers a couple of times. I can only have the drinks and a few low-carb veges but nothing else. Now on day 9, I'm doing much better and the sugar craving has gone away. I don't know if I can last more than two weeks on it, but given my bad medical news, I have to keep it up as long as I can. Go to bed if the foodies want to attack-you know those bits of food that seem to pop up all over the house.
